Working alongside experienced biologists and Dr. Martine deWit, I assisted in marine mammal rescues and necropsies as a volunteer. The MMPL's pathological findings are stored in FWC's database and were used as the primary data of my individual summer research project. I studied and compared the brevetoxin (a neurotoxin released by red tide's dinoflagellate) concentrations in the stomach content versus the liver tissue of manatee carcasses for a five year time period, aiming to find significant correlations. My findings allowed me to estimate a manatee's exposure time as well as the intensity of the red tide bloom based on the toxin concentrations alone. My research was organized and explained further in a formal written report.
