Velocity Programs provide high school students with over 120 hours of relevant, hands-on work experience and exposure to STEM careers by forming a consulting company and working for an actual client on a real world problem.

Beginning in June, I will be working on a one month program with a group of 20 high school students on a prototype for a Lunar Lander Crater Explorer.

The second project will be a group of high school women working to fix radios for the Austin Fire Department.

During the programs, students:

Research real-world topics
Learn to communicate and work effectively in teams
Visit Central Texas companies and other relevant sites
Produce a final project proposal and product
Present their work in a professional setting

US Navy
Seabee
May 2006 - Jun 2014

Over eight years in the navy reserve, I have acquired many skills, most importantly my ability to expand my comfort zone beyond its limits and to solve problems in any setting with diverse personalities.

On my deployment in Ramadi, Iraq, I improved upon my basic construction skills and even expanded upon them by learning how to re-wire light fixtures, change out window air conditioning units, and other odd ball handy-(wo)man tasks all while working in the occasionally high stress environment of a war zone. I was even put in charge of an entire platoon of Seals to build a large deck in the common area adjacent to the castle on our base.

I also have served on over 100 funeral honors details for deceased navy veterans across Texas.

On the reserve side of the navy, I spent several years coordinating travel and orders for quarterly and annual training for the entire Houston detachment.
